Interior design is the art of designing the interior, often including the exterior of a room or building. Whereas interior decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate but decorators don’t design. An interior designer (or a team of designers) is someone who coordinates and manages such civil engineering projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development. It communicates with the stakeholders of a project and the management and execution of the design.

Interior designing is not a new profession rather it has always been prevalent. During the first quarter of the 20th century, interior decoration was largely the concern of homemakers, upholsterers, and craftsmen. They are employed by architects to advise on the artistic aspects of certain spaces. The designs were predominantly Victorian style and were characterized by rooms decorated with heavy drapery, Victorian bric-a-brac, overstuffed furniture and dark colors. It was during this period, the profession of interior design started to gain recognition.

1950’s

By the end of world war-II, i.e. in 1940’s designs shifted to emphasize on post-war comfort. From 1950 onwards spending on homes for interior decoration increased. In the 1960s, decors found a distinct style that featured shag rugs, pop art, and green, yellow and orange hues offset with dark woods and molded plastic furniture. Decorating traits like feng shui and the need to be a portion of the universe made it prominent that holistic decorating developments have been born in this period.

1970’s

In 1970’s interior style eclecticism developed. Everything involving inside layout in the 70’s was about comfort and ease. The renowned shag carpet was just the beginning. The linoleum floors and laminate countertops are eyesores from this era and some of the main reasons for residence rework.

1980’s

In 1980’s bold design elements came into existence. Experimenting with the variety of drywall textures introduced about the ‘popcorn’ ceiling of the 80’s. It is believed as the worst hunting drywall method. In the 90’s there was no time for decorating as people started to soak in all the new technology. Minimalism turned new decorating craze and with this arrived the shiny appliances made of stainless steel, geometric contours and smooth traces.

Now

By the close of the 20th century, awareness of good and green interior designs increased the growth for good interior decorators. Nowadays, the themes that are utilized in interior design are not steady with particular time intervals rather it provides a capability to mix styles from different periods. There has never been a better time for interior designers and decorators to showcase their talent as they always continue to inspire the next generation.
